The way we grow our food has a big impact on its final carbon footprint – but so does its transportation. In fact, it’s estimated that food miles emissions represent about of the food supply chain’s total carbon footprint. The heavier and bulkier an item is, the harder it is to ship, leading to significantly higher carbon emissions and costs for food companies. This is particularly the case for liquid products, including fridge favourites like milk.

Spotted: In 2022, approximately were generated worldwide. Although this waste contains valuable materials such as metals, semiconductors, and rare elements, only around 22 per cent was properly recycled. As demand for electronics continues to increase, we need to become more efficient at recovering value from our old devices. A team of researchers believe they may have a solution.

Spotted: Extreme weather events are intensifying around the world, with hurricanes and floods causing widespread devastation. Flooding alone affects 1.81 billion people, or 23 per cent of the world population, and costs billions in damages. Yet, communicating the urgency of evacuation to communities at risk remains a significant challenge.

Spotted: Global food miles generate three gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions, or almost 20 per cent of total food system emissions. Heavier and bulkier products take more energy to ship, meaning fridge staples like milk and juice cartons are particularly emissions-intensive to move. Now, MYOM may have a solution. Approximately 90 per cent of milk is water, meaning that most of the energy (and emissions) spent transporting milk around the world is actually spent transporting water.

Spotted: More than 55 million people worldwide suffer from dementia, a disease that’s also associated with pain, loneliness, and depression. It has been shown that caring for a pet can help people with dementia to communicate better, as well as promote quality of life and encourage independence. However, it is also difficult for those with dementia to safely care for a live animal.

Spotted: Shipping is an age-old mode of transportation and remains a central part of global freight. But as the industry’s grown, so has its environmental impact, with fossil fuel-powered ships now generating of CO2 emissions a year. Enter French startup Neoline, which is harnessing sailing technology to chart a new course and steer the maritime sector towards a more sustainable future.

Spotted: As climate change accelerates, sustainable travel has become an imperative. It is estimated that tourism accounts for eight per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, while transportation is responsible for around a quarter of global CO2 emissions. Grounded, a Detroit-based startup, is tackling this challenge with an innovative modular design for electric vehicles. Grounded’s system offers a Lego-like, modular approach to vehicle customisation.
