INTRODUCTION Suicide and intentional self-harm are complex public health challenges. Globally, it was estimated in 2019 that there were more than 700 000 suicide deaths each year [1], and for every person who dies by suicide, it is estimated that 20 times as many deliberately self-harm [2]. People with opioid dependence are at elevated risk of suicide and self-harm compared with the general population [3-6].
