In the Planet of the Apes reboot prequel trilogy, the virus called the Simian Flu leads to the downfall of humanity and the rise of the apes. The Simian Flu was initially developed as a cure for Alzheimer's Disease, but it ended up being deadly to humans while making apes more intelligent. The mutated Simian Flu caused humans to lose the ability to speak, leading to a post-apocalyptic world where the apes dominate and human civilization collapses.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the first film in a prequel trilogy, released in 2011 and set to be followed by a fourth installment in 2024. The film tells the story of a scientist named Will Rodman who raises a genetically enhanced chimpanzee named Caesar as his own son, before Caesar leads a revolution of intelligent apes against humanity.

The Planet of the Apes franchise often gets overlooked among the numerous other film franchises that have exploded into popularity in recent years. And even though Marvel and DC have comic books that predate the Planet of the Apes movies, for an innovative sci-fi film franchise, it is one of the oldest ones that continues to produce insightful content. One thing that makes the franchise especially fresh, aside from Tim Burton's 2001 remake, is the newest trilogy.
