That something has given me hope I may sooner than later see something else I never have before: a Knick title. That something’s been on display the past month or so, never more “on” than in New York’s 112-98 win last night over Phoenix. The 1992 Knicks were the only MJ-era Knicks to win a playoff game in Chicago and take the Bulls to seven games.

What if one of those curses took hold? Maybe some collegian-age Knick fan read The Portrait of Dorian Gray that spring and wished for a twist: that Trae’s game would appear never to change, never to age, yet somehow grow more empty and meaningless over time. That would be the horror, the gruesome – the ease with which a seeming sporting supernova sublimated to a straight-up void. Young’s averaged 25-28 points a game since his debutante ball four years ago.

The Cleveland Cavaliers clinched homecourt through the Eastern playoffs a while ago, while the New York Knicks are about five minutes from locking down the third seed. On top of that, the Knicks were without Jalen Brunson, Mitchell Robinson, Miles McBride and Cam Payne. If they somehow won, great! Wins are always fun to talk about. If they lost, who cares?

In that vein, think of this as a springtime mailbag, clearing away the dead thoughts and detritus of a winter that saw the Knicks survive rather than thrive, with the promise of new growth as the playoffs and its thousand untold stories await to bloom.

For a long stretch last decade, it was the other way around, with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons routinely toying with Knick teams led by the likes of Frank Ntilikina and Kevin Knox. That may sound like a slander of the ex-Knicks.
