It came to me after the New York Knicks’ 108-105 overtime win in Game 1 of their semifinal series in Boston, a victory I could never have imagined. Midway through the third quarter, the Celtics were up 20 and Knicks fans were triggered after the one-sidedness of the regular season series. Midway through the fourth, the game was tied. Midway through overtime, the Knicks were up six.

Looooooong sigh . . . Losing 106-103 last night at home to Detroit didn’t end the New York Knicks’ season. They still lead the series 3-2 and have another chance to close it out Thursday, in a building where they’ve already won four times this season. Vegas still favors the favorites. Logic dictates with the Pistons needing three wins to advance and the Knicks only one, the Knicks held the edge. Coming into the series, the consensus was four of the five best players in it were Knicks.

Nick Kurtz’s parents had only arrived home a few hours earlier from watching him play baseball in Las Vegas when they got the phone call to head north for another game, this time in West Sacramento. His mother Marie was driving when she received the call Monday morning. She immediately started crying. Kurtz’s father Jeff picked up the phone while working on a real estate lease.
