The European steel industry is facing irreversible decline unless the EU and Member States take immediate action to secure its future and green transition. These are the chilling words of the European Steel Association (EUROFER) whose director-general, Axel Eggert, says that ‘the clock has already struck midnight’. According to EUROFER, a robust European Steel Action Plan under an EU Clean Industrial Deal, can no longer wait or manufacturing value chains across Europe will simply vanish.

Sev.en Global Investments has expanded its European industry footprint following the acquistion of green steel plants in the UK and Scandinavia. The company has signed an agreement with the Spanish sustainable steel company Celsa Group to acquire 100% of Celsa Steel UK and Celsa Nordic. Celsa Group is focused on sustainable production of steel using recycled scrap in electric arc furnaces (EAFs).

Pomini Tenova, a Techint Group Company, has been chosen by Chinese steel giant, China Baowu Steel Group Corporation Limited (Baowu) to supply and install new and fully automatic roll shop equipment. During an on-site signing ceremony on 8 November, Tenova signed two contracts for steel manufacturing plants during the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai. The signing ceremony was organized by Baowu and included the participation of Zhang Qing, chairman of OBEI Co., Ltd.

Under scrutiny from four parliamentary committees at a recent European Parliament meeting in Brussels on 12 November, Stephané Séjourné, the French candidate for the European Union’s Prosperity and Industrial Strategy portfolio, announced the need for a future pact between European companies and the European Union on ‘clean industry’ in order to lay down the foundations ‘for an industrial policy suited to our time’.
