THE Trump tariff pause brings little or no comfort to Irish wine lovers or importers. Uncertainty is the biggest worry for the latter. Should they wait (and they can’t wait too long) to place orders – and if they do decide to buy will their customers be prepared to pay the major price hikes that could follow. Several importers I have spoken to in recent days had already placed orders before a peeved president Trump talked tariffs, and before pausing such global action on Wednesday.

THERE’S not a week goes by that I don’t refer to my well-worn bible, simply called Wine Grapes. Within its 1,200 pages is the history, the geography and geology of some 1,368 grape varieties, many with up to a dozen local synonyms. It meant that I was able to quickly reference the Tinta de Toro grape in one of my bottle reviews below.

THE modern celebration of Mother’s Day had very noble beginnings, as a day of peace, honouring and supporting mothers who lost sons and husbands during the American Civil War from 1861-65. Its instigator was abolitionist, feminist, poet and author Julia Ward Howe, who had tended the wounded during the war, working with the widows and orphans of soldiers, on both sides of the conflict.
