This ridiculous piece of music has made me cry. It made me choke up the first time I heard it, in its intended context of the fake-but-real Pavement jukebox musical Slanted! Enchanted! in 2022. I teared up when I saw it in the context of the Pavements film premiere at Lincoln Center, and then a few times more when I was listening to the Pavements soundtrack on an elliptical at the gym and on an Amtrak train to Philadelphia. It’s happy tears, mostly.

THIS WAS SUMMER 1994, a fantastic voyage back to one of the all-time best years for popular music featuring Beck, Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang Clan, Warren G, Lisa Loeb, The Notorious BIG, Oasis, Sheryl Crow, Weezer, Green Day, Ace of Base, Cranberries, Hole, Aaliyah, Mazzy Star, NIN, etc [Spotify | Apple | YouTube]THIS WAS SUMMER 1999, a shiny and optimistic pre-millennial moment that – depending on your age – you either hate, or romanticize greatly.

Do you miss Deerhunter? I certainly do. Bradford Cox hasn’t released new music since Deerhunter’s most recent record Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared? came out in 2019. It’s funny how a guy who used to be arguably overly prolific has shifted into D’Angelo/My Bloody Valentine mode.

I wrote a feature length interview with the comics artist Julia Gfrörer for The Comics Journal. I’m very happy with this interview. Julia is an incredibly intelligent and provocative person, and I think if you’re already familiar with her art you’ll have a deeper understanding of where it comes from, and if you’re not, you’ll want to investigate further. Like, if you’re a goth in any way, you definitely need to get in on this.

Julia Gfrörer has built an acclaimed body of work over the past decade and a half with a steady stream of self-published mini-comics and zines, as well as three graphic novels - Black Is the Color , Laid Waste , and Vision - that have been published by Fantagraphics. Gfrörer's stories frequently explore transgressive sexuality, horror, the occult, and religion throughout history, and are meticulously illustrated with her distinctively sharp and severe linework.
