Supreme Court judges Lord Hodge, Lord Hamblen, Lady Rose, Lord Briggs and Lord Stephens handed down their unanimous judgment today (24 June), thereby reinstating a High Court decision that there was no infringement.

A US appeals court has thrown out a jury verdict that had fined Apple $300m for infringing the standard essential patents (SEPs) of patent holding company Optis Cellular Technology. On Monday (16 June), judges Sharon Prost, Jimmie Reyna and Leonard Stark at the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, vacated both the infringement and damages judgment and ordered a new trial in the Eastern District of Texas.

German firm Bardehle Pagenberg has topped a ranking of law firms dealing with the most patents at the Unified Patent Court (UPC), with international firms Taylor Wessing and Bird & Bird making up the top three. The ranking was drawn up by the European Patent Litigators Association (EPLIT) on the second anniversary of the UPC and shows that it is predominantly German IP firms and the larger European corporate law firms that are appearing on the court's caseload register.

Pinsent Masons has expanded its IP team in London by securing three IP partners and a legal director from Deloitte Legal. IP partners and brand specialists Rachael Barber and Jeremy Harris joined on 2 June along with legal director Richard Reeve-Young. The head of IP at Deloitte Legal, Paul Garland, will follow on 9 June. The quartet specialise in online brand protection strategies, enforcement and the application of generative AI.
