Last October, we meteorologists watched in disbelief as reports came in showing how rapidly Hurricane Milton was strengthening. Eventually becoming a Category 5, its winds peaked at 175 mph after undergoing “rapid intensification.” The National Hurricane Center defines rapid intensification as an increase in a tropical cyclone’s maximum sustained winds of at least 35 mph in a 24-hour period; Milton experienced just over a 90 mph increase in maximum sustained winds in 24 hours.
