MARLBOROUGH — Donald Landers, longtime member of the City Council, died on Wednesday, March 12, at the age of 83. Landers, who represented Ward 7 for nearly 20 years, was undergoing treatment for cancer. This would have been his final term on the council. Landers also worked for Marlborough Public Schools in a variety of positions, from teacher to assistant superintendent. Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

MARLBOROUGH – The search for a superintendent for Marlborough Public Schools will begin again following a unanimous decision by the School Committee to forego the choice between finalists David Ljungberg and David Thomson. During the meeting on March 11, committee member Katherine Hennessy cited the school district’s size, diversity, and the “need to be flexible” as reasons to conduct a new search. “It requires someone who can connect,” she said.

GRAFTON – One of Grafton’s oldest restaurants has changed hands. OnMarch 4, the Select Board approved the transfer of the all-alcoholic beverages license for the Post Office Pub, 1 Ray St., from Edward J. Whiterell (The Olde Post Office Pub Inc.) to the Helia Group LLC. The board also approved the re-issue of the 2025 Common Victualler License and Indoor Music License. WESTBOROUGH – On Feb. 24, Economic Development Coordinator Lara Crawford presented some ways residents and visitors can find their way around town. A wayfinding workshop in the Forbes Municipal Building invited participants to provide input on three different designs: a sleigh, the top of Westborough Town Hall, and a design that combines the sleigh and Town Hall. One resident compared the town hall design to a lighthouse.

WESTBOROUGH — An accident at the 101-mile marker eastbound on the Mass. Turnpike is causing delays. Firefighters from Westborough and Grafton worked a multi-vehicle crash with entrapment and injuries early this morning. State Police Accident Recon is investigating.

MARLBOROUGH – A birthday bash was held for a local centenarian. On Feb. 28, Gloria Zimmerman presided over a roomful of family and friends in celebration of her 100th birthday. Held at Christopher Heights on Pleasant Street, the event included lots of well wishes, presents, and a visit from Mayor J. Christian Dumais. When it came time for the cake, Zimmerman was given a big piece. “It’s very good,” she said after tasting it. It was high praise from Zimmerman, who knows a thing or two about cooking.

WESTBOROUGH – Nearly three years ago, the town decided to adopt the Community Preservation Act. Now, the Community Preservation Committee will come before the Annual Town Meeting to present its initial budget. The CPC’s request is Article 10 of the Town Meeting Warrant. Jim Ball of the CPC came before the Advisory Finance Committee on Feb. 24 to explain the article. For the 2026 fiscal year, the amount of CPA funds for Town Meeting to transfer and/or appropriate is $522,000.

MARLBOROUGH – Marlborough High School offers free breakfast. But some students are skipping out. A survey presented to the School Committee on Feb. 25 provided detail on why students are dismissing the free meal. About 40 percent of students said they don’t take the breakfast because they skip the meal altogether, while other students identified that they ate breakfast at home (40 percent), they didn’t like waiting in lines (32 percent), and they didn’t like the meal options (15 percent).

WESTBOROUGH – The latest estimates to repair the Westborough Public Library have arrived, and they show a bottom line of just under $14 million. Ed Baldwin, the chair of the Library Building Committee, told the Select Board during its meeting on Feb. 25, that the new estimate is “considerably less” than the $19 million estimate given in March 2024. Baldwin credited lower bids for construction.
