    The day after tomorrow, in other words Thursday March 6, will be the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Australian Grand Prix. It will also therefore be the 20th anniversary of the first grand prix entered by a Formula 1 team called Red Bull Racing, which had been known as Jaguar Racing before that and Stewart Grand Prix originally. Jaguar Racing, which was owned by Ford, had not been a success.

    In 2014 though, when both drivers immediately realised they were fighting for the title, things turned nasty, carrying on until Rosberg’s retirement at the end of 2016. It’s a few seasons to study for Leclerc. Rosberg was clearly the inferior talent to Hamilton, but showed he wasn’t prepared to give an inch, demonstrated by their clash at the first chicane in the 2014 Belgian GP. Hamilton claimed Rosberg said in a team debrief that the collision had been deliberate to “prove a point”.

    It all began so smoothly. Ron Dennis invited Formula 1 reporters to the McLaren executive dining room where, over a pleasant lunch, he outlined how access to Lewis Hamilton would be strictly controlled in 2007. Ensuring his young superstar an easy passage with the media during his debut season may have been the priority but, unknown to Dennis, in another room in the same building, an engineer was about to engage in subterfuge that would blow McLaren – and F1 – apart.

    For many years, I worked in the media centre of the Lombard RAC Rally. After a season spent covering Formula 1, this was always an interesting change of pace and motor sport culture. Rally people, even at this top level, were generally open and friendly. And the event itself was a powerful test of skill and stamina. In 1988, this final round of the World Rally Championship covered 2904 road miles, starting and finishing in Harrogate.

    This was taken through the media centre window at Suzuka in October 1994. The circumstances may not have been conducive to producing a clear image but it was a rare moment not to be missed – as can be judged by the phalanx of proper photographers on the right. Michael Schumacher, left, and Damon Hill were scarcely the best of mates.
