It’s kind of ironic that the BlueCross Bowl high school football state championships are being played in Chattanooga. With Finley Stadium, site of the nine title games, sitting in the shadows of Lookout Mountain, 18 teams will have reached the pinnacle of their sport this season when they take the field this weekend for three games each on Thursday (Division II-AA, DII-A, DII-AAA), Friday (Class 3A, Class 1A, Class 5A) and Saturday (Class 4A, Class 2A, Class 6A).

Officially, the high school football state playoffs begin next week. But Week 11 will pose some win-or-go-home scenarios for some teams across the state – and a handful locally. As teams get prepared for postseason play, so does Mostradamus. Mt. Pleasant (6-3, 4-2) at Loretto (5-4, 4-2): This Thursday clash won’t quite meet the 2023 edition of this Region 5-2A meeting, when these two combined for 108 points in a four-point Mustang victory.

Heading into the home stretch of the high school football regular season, most area teams are still in contention for playoff consideration. With that as the backdrop, the next couple of weeks stand to be intense – and likely unpredictable. But Mostradamus will try anyway. Brentwood (7-1, 3-0) at Independence (2-6, 1-2): Riding a two-game winning streak, both on the road, Independence will try to give the home crowd something to cheer about as it faces the potential Region 6-6A titlist.

With three weeks of regular-season play remaining in the high school football season, this might be considered the ‘high stakes’ portion of the schedule. That increased level of importance is reflected in the local slate of games for Week 9, as three of four are region matchups – each of which can impact playoff prospects, for at least one participant. That being the case, teams will look to put their best feet forward for the stretch run. As will Mostradamus.

Many schools across the Midstate are observing Fall Break this week, with football programs at those schools responding by taking their open dates this weekend. That creates a ‘boom-or-bust’ situation in Week 8 for Mostradamus. Locally, there are only two games scheduled – both region contests, one that’s set to draw a bit more attention than usual. Mostradamus needs to be on his best behavior. Nashville Chr. (5-1, 2-0) at Columbia Acad.

Week 6 wasn’t great for local high school football, with just one winner over the two-night schedule. Consequently, it wasn’t great for Mostradamus, whose predictions were pedestrian. Let’s see if things pick up for all involved in Week 7. Ravenwood (6-0, 2-0) at Summit (1-5, 0-2): The Spartans get a second straight Thursday night game, though this one was originally scheduled as such.
