For my family St. Patrick’s Day was a holy day, though not for the reasons you might imagine. We did not go to Mass, nor did we take part in the annual parade here in New York. The day started early and ended late, and our corned-beef sandwiches were hastily consumed.

Twenty years ago, when I worked as a newspaper reporter, I was assigned to write a story on a parish where two priests had been removed for allegations of abuse. It was shortly after the Spotlight series first appeared in The Boston Globe, and my editors were looking for a local angle on what was quickly becoming a national story. My job was to find parishioners and speak to them about their experiences. But on at least one day, I could not bring myself to do it.

A Reflection for Monday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary TimeFind today’s readings here. “The man had relations with his wife Eve,and she conceived and bore Cain, saying,‘I have produced a man with the help of the LORD. Next she bore his brother Abel. Abel became a keeper of flocks, and Cain a tiller of the soil.” (Genesis 4:1-2)Today we have an account of the first family. And boy, what a family it was. A man had two sons. Cain, the first born, is jealous of his younger brother.

Rome is, as a result, flooded with tourists, and as my colleague Gerard O’Connell reports, the torrent is not expected to end anytime soon. Jaded travelers might be forgiven for crossing Rome off their destination list this year.
