    From ESS NewsOregon-based LFP battery supplier Powin has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey. Last week, the battery business notified local and state officials of a potential cessation of business operations, warning that almost 250 staff, including senior executives, could be laid off if business conditions did not improve by July 28. Powin was required to issue the notice at least 60 days ahead of planned closures or layoffs, as an employer with at least 100 staff.

    From ESS NewsUS-based safety certification body UL has updated its test method for evaluating the risk of thermal runaway in battery energy storage systems (BESS). Updates to the fifth edition of UL’s ANSI/CAN/UL 9540A standard include clearer criteria for determining cell-to-cell propagation of thermal runaway, a chemical reaction that causes rapid temperature and pressure rises in battery cells, leading to the risk of fire and explosion.

The electric vehicle, battery, charging, and infrastructure analyst, owned by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, said its “Battery Energy Storage Monthly Assessment” reported 81 new battery projects worldwide during January.

    From ESS NewsDutch energy storage developer Lion Storage has announced financial close on a battery energy storage system (BESS) it has described as the largest BESS in the Netherlands. The €350 million ($367 million), 350 MW/1.4 GWh Project Mufasa, at the coastal city of Vlissingen in the southwest Netherlands, will feature 372 of Tesla’s MegaPack 2 XL battery systems, with the US-based company also providing EPC services for the site.
