The government is imposing a GH¢1.00 levy on ex-pump fuel prices, aimed at raising revenue to deal with the energy sector crisis. The government is looking to settle the US$3.1 billion energy sector debt, as of March this year, to keep the lights on. This year, the government will require an additional US$1.2 billion to procure essential fuels for thermal power generation alone, Parliament has been told.

Parliament has revisited the long-held discussion on the need to elect the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). Members of Parliament across the aisle have always supported the move, leading to the attempt to implement same in 2019, by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration. But for the last-minute misunderstanding on the modalities, which compelled the then president to pull the brakes on the subject, MMDCEs may have been elected by now, not appointed.

Members of Parliament (MPs) are urging their constituents to rather direct their demands for projects to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). According to the legislators, they often bear the brunt of the lack of development in the various districts, while the MMDCEs, who control 95% of the common fund, are left off the hooks.
