DES MOINES — A slate of Iowa tax credits would be repealed, created or adjusted under legislation making its way through the state legislature as the end of the session nears. Senate File 657 and its House companion, House File 1054, contain 17 provisions, including the creation of tax credits for film production and sustainable aviation fuel, as well as the elimination of older credit programs.

Welcome to week in Iowa. While it's starting to feel like summer in Iowa, school's not out yet for the state legislature. A week past the target end date, lawmakers still have a full plate of things to sort out, including the state budget, Gov. Kim Reynolds' priority bills, property taxes and eminent domain. North of the Iowa Capitol, Waterloo will become home to the country's largest cardboard box making facility after International Paper broke ground on its new facility this week.

Kim Reynolds’ proposed summer meal plan for Iowa kids who receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch, allowing the state to opt out of a federal summer food program and use the funding to establish its own. Named “Healthy Kids Iowa,” the pilot program will provide low-income families across the state with $40 worth of “fresh and nutritious food” per child per month in June, July and August.

Democratic State Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott is looking to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District in 2026. Trone Garriott, a Lutheran minister from West Des Moines, criticized Nunn for “not showing up” for Iowans, adding she has worked to lower prescription drug prices and advocated for public education during her time in the Iowa legislature. She announced her campaign on Monday, May 5.
