I remember when I was a little girl and I went with my parents to a candy store in Beverly Hills the women there would always give me a piece of candy. The thing was they had numbers tattooed on their wrists. Even at 7 or 8 years old I knew what that meant. Fast forward some 65+ years and I was blissfully unaware that this sentiment was still alive and kicking, just wearing a different costume. I’m gripped with fear and sadness.

I was a deeply unpopular student at Columbia for a simple reason: I was a Zionist. When I posted photos on Instagram of swastikas graffitied across campus, I received private messages telling me I was “attention-seeking.” When I hosted pro-Israel events, commenters online accused me of blood libel. I left Columbia earlier this year in part because of this bullying.

I remember being in grad school in the early 90s when the anti-depressants craze started. I was having trouble adjusting to a new environment, and didn't particularly enjoy my part-time editing job, so I called a hotline about depression and was offered a prescription for anti-depressants. I turned it down. Meanwhile, just about everyone in the program was on anti-depressants, walking around with fake smiles on their faces. No wonder I experienced difficulty connecting to these people.

When James Hilton was a high school sophomore in Darien, Connecticut, his parents sent him to a psychiatrist because of the many problems he was having at school: He struggled to do his assignments, and then forgot to turn them in. He played the guitar in the school band, but it was agony to sit still for practice. “I rarely did my homework. I failed French freshman year,” he told me recently.
