Community participation is the heart of El Tímpano’s work with the Bay Area’s Latino and Mayan immigrants. Over the past year, we’ve expanded our community programming to include civic science. Scientific research and study have historically been inaccessible to marginalized communities. Science remains an insular field where few efforts are made to make findings easily digestible to non-English speakers.

On Saturday, September 14th, Latino and Mam families gathered at Oakland’s Dimond Park to participate in a bioblitz of Sausal Creek – a biodiversity hotspot that traverses more than 2,500 acres from the hills to the Oakland Estuary. A bioblitz is an event where participants record as many species as possible within a designated location and time period.

Several dozen people gathered in downtown Oakland on Saturday, June 8, for the launch of “Postales de la Pulga,” a new photo exhibit from El Tímpano and Catchlight Local documenting the Coliseum Swap Meet in East Oakland. Displayed at the Oakland Lowdown, a community studio for news and art, the exhibit brings a taste of the beloved flea market’s vibrancy through instant photos, objects and the voices of patrons and vendors.

El sábado 20 de abril, más de 600 personas asistieron a la primera Feria de Recursos de El Tímpano en el Parque Histórico Peralta Hacienda en el este de Oakland. Los adultos se conectaron con los servicios de 30 organizaciones locales que brindan desde asistencia legal para inmigrantes y clases para aprender inglés hasta preparación para emergencias y apoyo para estudiantes inmigrantes.
