Although the 2007 judicial movement, led by the then-deposed chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry, lit up hopes for an “independent judiciary,” the dream eventually could not materialise. This was primarily due to two reasons: the glamourisation of the judiciary and judicial overreach, which made the judicature both politicised and polarised. Was the 26th Constitutional Amendment the answer, and that too in such haste? Perhaps not. It was more like political overreach versus judicial overreach.

It was after almost 20 years of a “tug of war” between the two political rivals, former prime ministers the late Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif (1986 to 2006), that they finally agreed on the "Charter of Democracy" (CoD) after former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf barred both from contesting the general elections in 2002. Ex-premier Imran Khan, who was then the opposition leader, backed the move and supported Musharraf — a decision he later regretted after the latter sidelined him too.

Thousands participated in the Cultural and Literature Festival. During the discourse, I also learned about the record number of book sales in Turbat during the Book Festival.

Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) have a history of ‘love and hate’ that dates back to the mid-80s, with the formation of Pakistan Muslim League (PML) after the non-party basis elections in 1985 under the umbrella of former military dictator General Zia ul Haq. The PML in its present form, i.e., PML-N, was an offshoot of the league led by the late prime minister Mohammad Khan Junejo after he was dismissed by Zia on May 28th, 1988.
