When he was growing up in Los Angeles, he gravitated to jazz in his early teens but, as a kid of his generation, was also into hip-hop. At university he studied ethnomusicology. He toured with Snoop Dogg and worked with musicians as diverse as jazz legend Herbie Hancock and Kendrick Lamar.

One of my favorite records, and most listened-to records, of 2021 was Mdou Moctar’s first release through Matador, Afrique Victime. He had previously released several other albums, one being a soundtrack to a Tuareg remake version of Purple Rain, another being 2019’s awesome Ilana the Creator. But this one proved to be a pretty big one among vinyl nerds like me; I remember a lot of record stores selling out of it quickly and preorders burning fast.
