Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 masterpiece North by Northwest was born from the ashes of failure. Hitch needed a hit after the disappointing box office of 1958’s Vertigo. He and screenwriter Ernest Lehman were assigned to write an adaptation of the novel The Wreck of the Mary Deare. The two men worked for weeks but couldn’t find an interesting way to tell the story. Lehman tendered his resignation with apologies.

My copy of A Wrinkle in Time is the yellow one from Dell Yearling, cover price of $1.25. Three children sit on the back of a marble-white centaur, a rainbow behind them as they fly through the sky over a strange planet. I own about five copies with all different covers, but the yellow Yearling one I bought because it was my cover from the fifth grade. I remember so many of the books we read for school in those years.
