The tiny bar near Pike Place closed down suddenly this week, and launched an online fundraising campaign in an attempt to scrape together $133,000 so it can reopen. Owner Bryan Jarr cites rising food and liquor costs, increased hourly wages, a divorce, and some “well-intentioned investments with the wrong people” among his recent financial troubles. “The full amount gets me re-opened,” he says, “and pays off the very real debt that’s incurred.

I write a monthly column about cocktails, so you’d think wine would be an adjacent character in the same pantheon, but my attention tends to veer first toward Seattle’s elite bartending culture — as well as all the unique booze being produced in our city. The rumors started in 2019 — would the Waterwheel Lounge close? In 2022, there was another round of speculation as the building the bar occupied was sold. Headlines announced its imminent closure, but nothing happened. Then nothing kept happening. But the wheels were turning behind the scenes. Well, it’s finally official: The Waterwheel Lounge is slated to close on January 10, 2026.

The peach–mango pie is a must-try dessert at Jollibee. Jollibee Contributing to the absolute deluge of fried chicken joints taking over in Seattle lately (we’re not complaining!), Filipino fast-food chain Jollibee will at last be opening first its Seattle restaurant next weekend. Hot on the heels of its Tacoma Mall opening in October 2023, the nation’s newest Jollibee will be moving into Rainier Valley Square, at 3820 Rainier Avenue South, alongside the Safeway.
