To the Editor:Last week, www.insideinvestigator.org reported that the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) had closed an abuse/ neglect case against a child’s family, three weeks before the infant’s death by overdose. DCF staff knew there was a problem, and failed to do their job. I’m not placing this responsibility on DCF. DCF willingly took on the responsibility of following up on precarious family situations and building procedures for everyone else to follow.

Anabel Figueroa is a strong believer in education. She used to work as an elementary school teacher in her native country of El Salvador. When she first arrived in the United States, after escaping a civil war, she took free adult English classes at Cloonan Middle School. She then went onto Norwalk Community College, where she studied to become a therapeutic recreation director and a certified nursing assistant.

Much of the talk about this vacancy was not about children or what’s best educationally for our community. Much of it was about trying to browbeat people into following the party line. Moreover, Ms. Pioli has been used as a scapegoat for a variety of problems. She has been blamed on the breakdown between the Board of Education, the superintendent/central office, and the teachers. However, the true breakdown was due to COVID, and a chaotic, rapidly changing situation.
