For 2024, I decided to devote my prompt writing time to a novel. The twist is that the novel plot will be generated entirely by the writing prompts I chose to use for the project – which were rolled randomly using my trusty dice and a few online prompt lists. You can find the Table of Contents here.

I do a lot of shop talk during my streams. Whenever someone enters the chat with a question about craft or publishing, I want to do my best to help. But the reality is that my stream time is also my work time. Which means a significant amount of it needs to be devoted to focus. So I’m not always able to devote as much time to craft discussion as I’d like. It was also pointed out to me recently that I get a lot of the same questions. Especially involving the basics of self-publishing.

I’ve participated in a lot of conversations lately regarding toxic relationships. And they’re always difficult discussions, not least because they involve staring into the face of some difficult truths. The fact is, the types of toxic relationships are as numerous and varied as relationships in general. Because any time you interact with a person or a group, those interactions can, sadly, turn sour. Sometimes a toxic interaction doesn’t end up involving just a single person.

Everyone’s Child is a high fantasy story which takes place in a secondary world (completely made up). I originally started writing it back in college. But since I had no plan, the work fizzled out after a mere 11,000 words. In August of 2022, after I finished my Eternity’s Empire series, I chose to revive Everyone’s Child to replace it. I like switching off between more sci-fi and more fantasy oriented worlds, and I had just finished working in a massive galactic empire.

For Chapter 20, the prompt was: “a man asks his twin to fill in for him for a relationship he’s gotten tired of.”This was one of the first prompts I rolled when I set out to do this project.

Everything is cake nowadays right? Well writing a novel is a lot like making a layer cake. I’ve used a lot of metaphors to talk about writing. The one that crops up most often is that writing and publishing is a lot like a mountain. If you look at the whole thing from the start, it can feel daunting, an impossibly high and steep slope. And it can be difficult to know where to begin. Breaking the process down into its most basic pieces makes a lot easier to handle and consider.

That’s what these writing prompt sessions are great for, actually.

I spent a significant amount of my life avoiding certain activities because I was nervous about messing up. Maybe this is one of the reasons why they say ‘perfection is the enemy of good.’ If you’re afraid to try something just because you won’t do it right the first time, you miss out on a lot of experiences. It took me a long time to discover why I was so afraid of messing up. Now that I understand the early childhood criticisms that caused me to fear mistakes, the reality frustrates me.
