NHS nurses in Scotland are being asked to accept or reject the Scottish Government’s two-year pay offer in consultations led by unions. Nurses on Agenda for Change have this month been offered an 8% two-year pay offer in Scotland, alongside the promise of an ‘inflation guarantee’. Today, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has opened a consultation for its members on whether they accept or reject the offer. Eligible members have until midday on Wednesday 14 May to cast their vote.

Only around one in 10 nurses or nursing staff working in general practice are given a monetary bonus in addition to their salary, an exclusive survey has suggested. A clear majority (86%) of general practice nursing staff responding to a Nursing in Practice survey said they did not receive a bonus. And for those that do, for most respondents it seemed a bonus was linked to performance.

A second State of the World’s Nursing (SOWN) report will be launched next month, promising to give an ‘accurate view’ of the global nursing workforce, it has been confirmed. The report from the World Health Organization (WHO) will be launched on International Nurses Day (IND) on May 12 2025 – which is also Florence Nightingale’s birthday. It will follow from the first SOWN report from 2020 which revealed a global shortfall of just under six million nurses.

Only around a third of nurses and nursing staff working in general practice proactively try to negotiate their own pay rise every year, a new and exclusive Nursing in Practice report has suggested. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has said that while asking an employer for a pay rise may not be easy, especially in small GP practices, it should ‘feel like a normal part of the workplace routine’.
