INTRODUCTION Life-sustaining medical technologies expand the care options for extremely premature babies at birth while also creating dilemmas. Clinicians and families are charged with fraught and ethically complex choices for their unborn infants (Bandini, 2020; Levy, 2005; Mesman, 2008). There is a grey zone of viability or ‘periviability’ between 22 weeks and zero days of gestation and 24 weeks and six days (hereafter 22–24 weeks).
