It’s Christmas time! That means decorating a big pine tree with all your favorite ornaments, drinking eggnog, spending time with your family and giving them their favorite gifts. Gift giving on Christmas started around 336 CE when the story of the Biblical Magi gave gifts to baby Jesus on his birthday, December 25th. Not only are gifts given on Christmas, but also all month long for December birthdays!December’s birthstone is blue zircon, or often commonly used, blue topaz.

Opal is one of my favorite gemstones. The fiery colors of white, blue and orange create a stunning centerpiece for any jewelry. While these are the colors we see most often in opal, this gemstone can come in a variety of colors. The rarest of these colors is the black opal, which has reflections of every color on it! Opals can also be dyed to change their color or enhance their natural color.

August is the month of peridot, a beautiful light green gemstone. This is one of the few gemstones that can only occur in one color, though it can still range in different hues of color. The colors range from yellowish-green to brownish-green. Peridot is brought to the surface by volcanoes and can occasionally be found in meteorites. This gemstone is found now mostly in Arizona in the San Carlos Reservation. It can also be sourced from China, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Africa.

Red, white, and blue. Not only the colors of our beautiful United States flag, but also the colors of gemstones suitable for everyday wear! We only recommend a small selection of stones for everyday wear because our lives are full of fun activities and chores which can all put our jewelry at risk. Red refers to ruby, which is made of a variety of the mineral corundum. This is one of the same minerals that makes up sapphires, meaning that they are a very similar stone.
