At least four people dead after cable car falls to the ground in Italy

At least four people have died, one person is missing and one is seriously injured after a cable car crashed to the ground near Naples in southern Italy. One of the cables supporting the cabin had snapped at Monte Faito, a peak around 45km southeast of Naples, Reuters reports citing local Italian media. A total of sixteen other passengers were helped out of the cabins that had some to a stop mid-air near the foot of the mountain. They were evacuated one by one using harnesses.

The European Central Bank has cut its lending rate for the seventh consecutive time, and for the third time this year alone. The ECB rate has been reduced by 0.25%, meaning the new rate is 2.40% - at the end of 2023 the rate was 4.5%. It’s great news for the 130,000 Irish homeowners on tracker mortgages, however not all mortgage holders will benefit and it is likely to mean lower savings and deposit rates.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Easter Bank Holiday weekend is going to be a very wet one, as weather warnings have been issued for eleven counties so far over Friday and Saturday. “Easter weekend will be unsettled with rain and showers. The driest weather is expected later on Saturday and early on Easter Sunday,” said the latest statement from the national forecaster.
