Community surprises Madison student with a new car

A young Madison man got the surprise of a lifetime when friends, coworkers, even strangers came together to replace the car he totaled while working during last month's icy weather. They jumped at the chance to give back to someone they say has poured so much of his time and talent into his community. Madison Central graduate Omari Daniels has many jobs. He's a student at Hinds Community College, assists show choirs, is a summer camp counselor and works at Madison Beagle Bagel.
City of Jackson to pay $17k for stolen golf carts

The city of Jackson will fork over nearly 20-thousand dollars for stolen golf carts.According to the parks and recreation director, five carts leased from Yamaha were stolen from the Pete Brown golf course and the course at Grove Park over a four-year period.The City Council voted Tuesday to pay Yamaha more than $17,000. According to the mayor, they’ve now installed GPS on the golf carts and fortified the barn where they are stored to prevent theft.
Capitol Police chase ends in arrest of man wanted in Michigan

A Capitol police chase ended with the arrest of a man wanted in Michigan.Around 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Capitol Police attempted to stop a driver on Northview and Meadowbrook Roads. Police say the driver refused to stop, leading officers on a chase to Eminence Row. A police spokesman says officers learned the driver, 54-year-old Kenneth Davis, had multiple outstanding warrants from Michigan.
State House passes paid parental leave bill for state employees

House Speaker Jason White says the Mississippi House of Representatives passed a bill that could give eight weeks of paid leave to employees after the birth or adoption of a child.House Bill 1063 passed by a 114-0 vote. The Mississippi State Employees Paid Parental Leave Act would provide state employees eight weeks of 100% paid leave as the primary caregiver after the birth or adoption of a child and two weeks for the secondary caregiver.

New disc golf course opening set

Jackson city leaders say a disc golf course in Livingston Park will open this month. The 18-hole course is a first for the city. It is located next to the Jackson Zoo. Jackson's park and recreation director, Abram Muhammed, says the course will have the capacity to host tournaments beyond city and state levels. Muhammed says there has already been some play at the course. The official grand opening is next week.

Mississippi Symphony Orchestra moving season opener from Thalia Mara Hall

The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra is moving its season opening events out of Thalia Mara Hall.The orchestra planned to hold Pops and Bravo concerts at Thalia Mara Hall in October. MSO Executive Director Jenny Mann said they will now hold the events in local school performing arts centers. Mann hasn’t seen the timeline for repairs to the HVAC system or mold remediation reports at Thalia Mara. She said she has spoken with city leaders.

I appreciate all of the calls and text messages concerning Lt Governor Hosemann. As he walked out of the Capitol a little while ago, he looked at us and said, “Hey, that last bill was awful!” He is doing well and if I know him he will be trying to come back to the Capitol today.
