After the Los Angeles wildfires destroyed her home in January, Meghan Daum found herself mourning the ordinary things – a toaster, five bottles of wine, elephant-shaped bookends – that a life is made of On 8 January of this year, the house I was renting in Altadena, California, burned down in one of the seven wildfires that ripped through the Los Angeles area that week. In the bigger picture, the loss of my house seems almost incidental.

Hi everyone,As you’ve probably noticed, changes are afoot around here. First, The Unspeakable Podcast is slowly being renamed The Unspeakeasy. Notwithstanding White House mayhem/authoritarianism/fascism/whichever termism you preferism, it seems like we might be moving past the age of unspeakability and into something at least slightly easier. So, The Unspeakeasy seems like a better name for the podcast. That does not mean it’s just for women or is directly related to The Unspeakeasy community.

I don’t understand people who keep the window shade down on a plane. We’re 35 thousand feet in the sky. You don’t want to check out the view? We’re above the freaking clouds, for God’s sake. Humans could only dream of a view like this for millennia. And you have the shade down.
