Ballard’s popular butchery Beast & Cleaver is expanding into a new restaurant and pub in downtown Ballard called Little Beast. Owner Kevin Smith, who opened the Beast & Cleaver butchery in 2019, announced his new venture on social media. Little Beast is moving into the former Ballard Pizza Co. location (5107 Ballard Ave NW). Ballard Pizza Co. moved just up the street last year after choosing to combine its Frelard and Ballard locations.

After years of planning, Salmon Bay Park has a new and improved playground. Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) reopened the renovated play area at Salmon Bay Park (2001 NW Canoe Place) earlier this month with a ribbon-cutting celebration scheduled for Sunday, April 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.The renovation started in September and is based on the “Woodland Explorer” concept, which was selected through community input gathered during the project’s planning phase.

The locally owned thrift shop Thread Hunter is moving into a new spot in May—it’s taking over the former Truffles & More location at 5510 22nd Ave NW. Owners Elissa Pemberton and Melissa McLennan opened Thread Hunter in 2022 in the Ballard Blossom building. The former florist shop was converted into a business incubator called The Ballard Collective in 2021, and Thread Hunter has been operating out of the space for almost three years.

Caffe Ladro is opening a new cafe in Ballard at 2240 NW Market St.The Ballard cafe will be Ladro’s 11th location in Seattle. It’s going in the ground floor of the new Ballard Independent apartment complex on the corner of NW Market St and 24th Ave NW. The entire corner block has transformed since the 2019 fire on the 2300 block of NW Market St, which destroyed several businesses. The Ballard Independent complex will also soon be home to Exit 5 Korean Barbecue, which should open sometime this year.

Someone has been blowing up garbage cans at the Loyal Heights Playfield (2101 NW 77th St) baseball dugout. According to a nearby resident Josh West, the first explosion happened just after 11 p.m. on Friday night. West said the Seattle Parks Department cleaned up the damage on Saturday. Then, on Saturday night at the same time, there was another explosion, destroying the replacement garbage can.
