1. IntroductionRiver biofilms growing on any carrier in water are an important part of lotic ecosystems. Biofilm formation is a dynamic process, which occurs when microorganisms adhere to the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secreted by themselves. The biofilm develops a wavy shape and eventually forms a complex three-dimensional (3D) network [1,2].
