    Harmony Gold, South Africa's top gold producer by volume, has agreed to buy Australian miner Mac Copper in a deal worth $1.03bn (R18.42bn) as it steps up a diversification into copper. Johannesburg-based Harmony said it is offering $12.25 (R219.18) per Mac Copper share in the cash deal, a 20.7% premium to the stock's closing price in New York on Friday. Mac Copper said its board unanimously backs the offer.

    Melbourne — Global mining giants BHP and Rio Tinto are facing class actions alleging widespread and systemic sexual harassment at Australian mine sites, law firm JGA Saddler said on Wednesday. JGA Saddler said women who spoke out about the harassment were allegedly discriminated against by the miners and that it expects “thousands of female workers” at the two companies to join the class actions.

    London/Melbourne — Rio Tinto said on Wednesday it would acquire Arcadium Lithium for $6.7bn in an agreed cash deal that would make it one of the world’s largest lithium producers. Rio, the world’s largest producer of iron ore, is transforming itself into a processor of high end, low carbon raw materials that will be needed during the energy transition. It said it would pay $5.85 per share for the US-based lithium miner in an all-cash deal.

    Melbourne — The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has elected Leticia Carvalho of Brazil as its next secretary-general, as pressure mounts for a pause on efforts to mine the sea floor for minerals for use in the energy transition. Carvalho replaces two-term incumbent Michael Lodge, the ISA said in a statement on Friday. Her four-year term as head of the UN-mandated body that regulates sea-floor mining will start in 2025.
