It might seem premature to compare Beth Taylor to two of the greatest singers in the mezzo-soprano range (the other being Elena Gerhardt), but when you hear her sing you understand why such comparisons are valid.

A new name for the festival, but the same quality of performance at Leeds’ Howard Assembly Room. The reaction from Schubert’s friends on first hearing some of the songs from Winterreise was, according to one of them, “Verblüfft” meaning astounded. That term might well serve for this evening’s response, especially from those who had not previously experienced Florian Boesch’s highly individual interpretation of the work.

The Getty Estate once again opens its gates for another season of glorious music. Public booking opens for Garsington Opera’s new season on Tuesday 1 April, with some seats still remaining although as usual, those lucky enough to be members will have already nabbed a fair percentage.

Glyndebourne’s 2025 season begins in May. We asked Stephen Langridge for his views on the upcoming festival and the future of opera. Looking at the season overall, it seems so perfectly balanced and classically oriented – something to please everyone, and from Handel to Janáček. How difficult is it to achieve this sort of wide appeal? Thank you – that’s the kind of reaction I always hope for! How tricky is it? It’s actually the work of a big team of people with different expertise.
