I used to be embarrassed that I don’t speak French well after living in Paris for fifteen years. But I’ve gotten over that. For one reason, worrying about something you can’t do is a waste of precious time. Far better to put your energy toward enjoying what you love. I also realized that I now have all the French I need to be happy in Paris — that is, to have a social life and to feel connected and as if I belong. Turns out, all I need is four phrases. The first time I held it in my hands...the infant version of my book, the advanced reader copy ( "ARC"), joy coursed through my body. It wasn't the pride that I'd done it, finishing the 200+ page manuscript at age 80, no less - which many regard as "old." The delight was that I could now hold it in my hand. It has been born.
