Avelo Airlines, a budget carrier offering low fares to a growing number of U.S. cities and Puerto Rico, recently announced that it had signed a contract with the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security to fly deportation flights out of Mesa, Arizona that will begin on May 12. One of Avelo’s two transit hubs is New Haven, Connecticut’s Tweed airport, which two years ago welcomed the airline and awarded the company a state subsidy on jet fuel.

On March 10, a three-week wildcat strike by thousands of correction officers at New York State prisons protesting their working conditions ended when their union, the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association, reached a deal with Gov. Kathy Hochul. The agreement included overtime provisions and a 90-day suspension of limits on prisoner solitary confinement. During the strike at least 10 inmates died. Two thousand COs were fired when they refused to return to work.

From his first days in office, Donald Trump took steps to prevent undocumented immigrants and refugees from entering the country. But he’s also targeted entirely different groups of people who have Temporary Protected Status. In late January he froze all federal funding to assist refugees resettling in the U.S. He also prohibited all refugees from entering the country, even those who had already been thoroughly vetted and approved — some of whom had already purchased airline tickets.
