As a puppy, he arrived at the Laurens County Humane Society and they named him Cow-a-Bunga because he had black and white spots, similar to a cow. Adopted soon after, his new owners named him Ralphie but life happens and when the family could no longer care for him, he was returned to the Humane Society. Today, Ralphie is three and a half years old and has been with the staff and volunteers at the Humane Society for longer than any other dog to their recollection –nearly two years.

The City of Laurens will once again celebrate Juneteenth from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 14. The annual event brings the community together to celebrate the date African American slaves received word they were free in 1865. Though celebrations date back to 1866, Juneteenth wasn’t named a federal holiday until 2021 and communities across the country will recognize African American music, poetry, food and contribution to America’s history.

The Laurens County Cancer Association (LCCA) is an independent nonprofit organization that supports Laurens County residents diagnosed with cancer. “In Laurens County, there is not a place locally to receive treatment, so everyone is traveling at the minimum, 25 miles away, usually several days per week,” said Anna Drew Miller, Executive Director. “The funds we raise go directly to fuel assistance. We also provide nutritional support and prescription reimbursement.

At the recent Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD55) school board of trustees meeting in May, Chief Financial Officer Jim Lollis presented the first reading of the general fund budget of just over $62 million. Upon completing the budget workshop, Lollis said the fiscal budget, which will end June 30,2026, was not balanced. “The budget is currently $62,219,000, creating a deficit of $898,000.
