PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — The growing issue of homelessness in North Carolina is documented. Each year, housing and shelter organizations take a count of people in their communities who are unhoused. It’s called the point-in-time count. Federal funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development is tied to that number. In the most recent figures statewide, the 2024 point-in-time count found 11,626 homeless people. 2,070 of them were children.
