Sustainability has taken on a whole new meaning for me this month. The dictionary has two definitions of sustainability, and both resonate as we enter April, which focuses on sustainable parking, transportation, and mobility: The ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level. Avoiding the depletion of natural resources to maintain an ecological balance. Let’s take these one at a time.

In the context of smart cities, “smart parking” refers to a system that uses technology to provide real-time information about available parking spaces. This allows drivers to quickly locate open spaces and reduces traffic congestion caused by people circling for parking, ultimately contributing to a more efficient urban environment. Simple idea. Complex implementation. Some parking operations are already there—sensors, cameras, data analytics, digital reservations, mobile payments—the list goes on.

I had the opportunity to attend some of the State & Regional Association events as I closed out 2024. These events are always so valuable as I leave the confines of my office and am out and about with all of you. Sitting down and conversing with many of you, with whom I usually communicate by email, is the best part of my job. I get to do this at both the Conference & Expo and the Leadership Summit, but I also have other responsibilities as those are IPMI events.
