If you were born any time after 1950 or so, chances are, during some portion of your elementary school years, you were exposed to the children’s literature classic “The Chronicles of Narnia”. When I was in first grade, I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful teacher (Mrs. Olson-Bartley!) who read the series’ first novel aloud to our class, a chapter each day.

The fact that I even feel it necessary to write this in the first place is enough to inspire a dramatic eye roll, but here we are - in a world where common sense is about as common as common courtesy (i.e., not so common). In today's world, we don't need to look far to find examples of "good versus evil". But while the nightly news pitches us one view of the world (perhaps the harshest one), children's books, rom-coms, and social media tell us stories of an entirely different type. In most of Western society, from a young age, we are led to believe that the good guy always wins, that the prince and princess live "happily ever after", and that a meaningful life includes a shiny car and shiny hair and shiny vacations.
