Two new hotels are coming to Midland courtesy of Western International. Tru Hotel by Hilton began construction at 4100 N. Big Spring St. late last year and is expected to be complete by the end of this year or early next year. Midlanders and fellow West Texans have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Costco Wholesale in Midland. According to a banner on the storefront, an opening date has been set. Costco will open its doors at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 10. Drilling activity continues to remain at levels not seen in over three years, declining for a fifth consecutive week — the first time that has happened since September 2023. Oilfield services firm Baker Hughes said Friday its weekly U.S. rig count was down three rigs to 563 rigs, the lowest level since November 2021 and down 37 rigs or 6% from year-ago levels. For the month, the rig count was down 24 rigs, the third consecutive monthly decline and biggest monthly decline since August 2023.

Growing uncertainty weighed on crude prices, sending them to a second consecutive weekly decline. Traders are uncertain about the status of tariffs amid dueling court rulings. They are also watching the Saturday meeting of OPEC+, at which they could discuss increasing output in July beyond previous forecasts. Midland Chevron employees were startled this week to learn the company would be laying off 800 employees by mid-summer. The company rushed to assure them that report was a mistake. “On May 16, Chevron notified the Texas Workforce Commission of its anticipated workforce reduction of approximately 200 employees in Midland, in accordance with the WARN Act,” Chevron spokesperson Catie Matthews told the Reporter-Telegram.
