Landless People’s Movement (LPM) leader Bernadus Swartbooi says his party will retain its two stronghold regions in southern Namibia in the upcoming regional and local authority elections in November. The party has shifted its focus to the November elections and will not take part in by-elections taking place on 17 June. The party will, however, endorse other opposition parties’ candidates running in the by-elections, Swartbooi said in a recent interview with OneAfrica.

The agriculture ministry has introduced stricter cattle movement controls at Okakarara, following a lumpy skin disease (LSD) outbreak in the veterinary district. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform’s veterinarian for the Okakarara district, Rossalia Paulus, on Monday said animal gatherings are permitted at Okakarara, Okamatapati, Okondjatu and Otjituuo.

A woman (27) was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend (32) in the early hours of Saturday morning in the Hardap region’s Rehoboth Rural constituency. According to a crime report issued by the Namibian Police on Monday, the incident reportedly occurred in a riverbed in the Rietoog settlement in Klein Aub, at around 05h00. It is further reported that the deceased, identified as Moreen Van Wyk, and her boyfriend had gone out for the night to a bar located in the settlement.

The Zambezi regional health directorate has urged residents to continue taking preventative measures after malaria treatment to avoid being infected again. The region has reported about 1891 new cases this week, bringing the total malaria cases to 15 371, 14 deaths, and 626 hospital admissions since January. Health director Woita Kapumburu told The Namibian yesterday that though this week they have seen a slight decrease in new infections, they are concerned about the spike in reinfections.
