Mines have been the consistent bedrock for local economies, but the renewable transition, a decline in coal exports, and imminent mine closures – beginning with the massive BHP Mount Arthur mine which employs some 2,000 people and is scheduled to stop mining next year – threaten to disrupt this balance and transform the Hunter Valley communities.

When asked to describe herself in three words, Greens candidate for New England Wendy Wales chose ‘eco green feminist’. The former teacher, activist and conservationist has lived in Muswellbrook since 1995 and is known for her community contributions and passion for instilling a love of the environment and learning to students at Muswellbrook High School.

For their monthly breakfast meeting, the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce took the opportunity to host a ‘Meet the Candidates’ event, inviting New England’s federal candidates to introduce themselves and debate on local issues. The event was well attended with four of six candidates attending in person, Barnaby Joyce sending through a video and Family First candidate Holly Masters sending her apologies.

With a change of electoral boundaries, the Hunter Valley centre of Muswellbrook Shire has now changed from the federal electorate of Hunter to New England. Combined with the Upper Hunter Shire, which has been part of the electorate since 2016, the area is – to quote former Muswellbrook Shire Mayor Steve Reynolds – a ‘pimple on the bum’ of the New England with some very different needs and issues.
