Catholics in the Lakeland and around the world are celebrating after the election of Pope Leo XIV on May 8. According to Bishop Gary Franken of the Diocese of St. Paul, there had been some speculation the conclave, the secret voting process by which a new pope is chosen, would take longer because of how many of the participating cardinals were new to the process. To be elected, a person must achieve a two-thirds majority of the votes.

COLD LAKE – MLA Scott Cyr will be meeting with the board of the Cold Lake Ag Society later this month to address concerns about crime after the Society’s hall was twice targeted by thieves earlier this year. Cold Lake Ag Society President Jay Cory provided Lakeland This Week with a copy of the letter the society sent to Cyr following the second break in.

Teachers across Alberta will be deciding whether to go on strike after rejecting the mediator’s recommendations for the next provincial collective agreement. According to results of the ratification vote held May 2 – 5, 81 per cent of teachers participated in the vote and 61.99 per cent of voters were against the recommendations.

ST. PAUL - The Town of St. Paul has been able to dramatically reduce its Workplace Compensation Board premiums by making safety a priority. According to CAO Steven Jeffery, the annual cost of WCB premiums “fluctuates depending on our performance. It can range from $0.40 per $100 of payroll to $1.60 per $100 of payroll.” In 2020, the town paid $111,136.78 in WCB premiums, but by 2023 the premium had dropped to just $41,980.67. According to Jeffery, the town’s net WCB premium in 2025 is $59,000.
