There are currently five major streams of Protestant political outlook and activism. The first, in terms of age, is the old Religious Left. It’s comprised chiefly of clergy from what’s left of Mainline Protestantism. It has little political influence but sometimes gets attention because it can stage rallies with berobed clergy in clerical collars. And it still has historic institutional affiliations.

In cleaning out some of my files recently I came across a very fat folder labeled “CUIC.” Churches Uniting in Christ is an ecumenical effort to merge, covenant, or express unity between denominations. Not much from the past 20 years was in the folder but there was plenty before that. It was intriguing enough that I believe reflection on ecumenism is worth a series of articles. We are, after all, in a time in which institutions (including church denominations) are rapidly changing.

The Institute on Religion and Democracy hosted the Rev. Dr. Richard Allen Hyde, Pastor of Community United Church of Christ of San Carlos, to deliver our Wednesday Worship sermon on March 26. Dr. Hyde, a Congregationalist minister, spoke to the IRD staff on the passage of Isaiah 55:3-11 and “Before We Were the Land’s.”Video of the worship service can be accessed below as well as text of the sermon.

United Methodism’s schism in Africa resulted in the brief incarceration of Methodist leader Jerry Kulah, who led 100 churches (of 500 in Liberia) out of the denomination. Kulah is well known as a leader of African delegates at several United Methodist General Conferences across the years reaffirming traditional teachings. Kulah and his churches in Liberia have aligned with the new Global Methodist Church.

Many of our social, political, or personal issues we name “evil” are not truly evil at all but perversions of the good. Though I wish to present some new, brilliant opinion, it may very well sound old. I hope it does sound slightly old precisely because the ideas are old. They were developed and given to us by prominent Christian intellectuals of the 20th Century. We have simply not listened or chosen to forget.
