The United Nations' (2016) sustainable development goal 3.1 is ‘to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100 000 live births by 2030’. In line with this, the UK committed to a goal of reducing maternal deaths in England by 50% by 2025 (Department of Health and Social Care, 2017).
