1 Introduction Individuals, populations and species vary in their ability to resist and tolerate parasites, and this can impact how parasites spread through and influence populations and communities (Hawley and Altizer 2011). At the species level, differences in defence mechanisms against parasites can arise from variation in host ecology, morphology, physiology and behaviour.
