Netflix will officially end its DVD rental service on Friday, marking the end of their 25-year business of mailing DVDs to members. After announcing earlier this year that it would be shutting down the service, the company will be expecting returns of their customers’ remaining DVDs until October 27. Netflix was first launched in 1998 as a DVD service, promising easier rental experiences than Blockbuster and Hollywood video.

The Ten Commandments, the 1923 film by Cecil B. DeMille which was one of the first large scale film productions and featured the biggest motion picture set ever built, will have its 100th anniversary celebrated with a multi-day event. DeMille, an icon of Hollywood, was one of the first directors to use theatrical lighting on sets, implemented the microphone boom and was a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Writers Guild of America has reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to end its strike after almost five months, sending movie theater stocks soaring. “We have reached a tentative agreement on a new 2023 MBA, which is to say an agreement in principle on all deal points, subject to drafting final contract language,” said the WGA in a release to its members.

Animation Is Film recently revealed that its upcoming annual festival will open with the latest film from Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron and will close with Netflix’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Expendables 4, titled Expend4bles, opened with $3.2 million on Friday, a franchise-low opening for the Expendables series. The $3.2 million tally includes $750,000 in Thursday evening previews. With a budget of $100 million from Millenium, it is now looking at a potential severe new loss in profits; the production company had been looking to open somewhere within the $15-$17 million range for the weekend, but it’s currently on track to produce an all-time low at only $8 million.
