Archbishop Andrew John has released his annual Christmas message, this year in conjunction with the Catholic Archbishop of Cardiff, Mark O’Toole, and the Free Churches of Wales Moderator, Simon Walkling. The message, political in its implications, calls for peace at home and abroad. Speaking to WalesOnline, the Archbishop expressed a frustration at the levels of deprivation seen in the UK, and Wales specifically, an issue manifesting itself in the cost-of-living crisis.

The Welsh general store chain What! Stores has announced that it will sell certain sanitary products to customers at the price at which their business pays. The company says that they “do not believe that profit should be made on such items”. Such a pledge has slashed the price of boxes of certain pads and tampons to below £1. Such a decision comes in light of research indicating that period poverty in the UK still remains a lived reality for many.

Messages of gratitude and commendation have poured in from Mark Drakeford’s Cardiff West colleagues and beyond in light of the announcement that he is standing down in his role as the Welsh First Minister. Welsh Labour councillors from his constituency have praised Mr Drakeford for his pragmatism and clarity in his five years as First Minister, while noting that his official resignation has not come as a surprise to either the political community or to the public.
