About ten years ago, I wrote an article titled Garbage Rises with which I meant to discuss the god awful reality of so-called American meritocracy. Risking repetition, I wrote another piece in the same vein, recently. But jeeez, our times have put such an exclamation mark on the observation that “garbage rises” that I find warranted yet a third rumination on human garbage in America. The backdrop is that we in America have as a new watchword not the rule of law, but the rule of garbage.

Resistance to Trumpest Fascism grows. Discussions, phone calls and emails, meetings, rallies, marches, and soon occupations and encampments. Desires, demands, confrontations, and disobedience. As all this unfolds, awareness of ills and also of their underlying causes will grow. Participants will broaden their views and commitments. Resisters will debate various differences.

At times like these—who am I kidding, when were there times like these?—one wants to stay in bed, bury one’s head, dream another dream. Or perhaps to privately twist and shout. Or what? I am not going to report what Trump and his lackeys are doing, nor even the ramifications of what they are doing yet again. Such reports are abundant. More, the broader implications have begun to register. Events are no longer just academic factoids. Implications have become felt awareness. Our condition is serious.

Is today’s moment that different from all prior moments? Haven’t we endured extreme subterfuge forever? “Defense Department”? “Serve the people”? “Health and human services”? “Workers rights”? “High technology”? “Home of the free”? “Beacon of Hope?” Even “destroyed the city to save it.” Is today just more of yesterday? Is Trump just another turd on top? Just more odious? Does something make this crisis different from all other crises? Truth be told a whole lot is certainly familiar.

As resistance to fascism grows, and it is growing—how could it not—activists will face many choices. One that has often been quite contentious will re-arise. How should we decide whether to be mainly class-oriented or mainly identity-oriented? This is not a topic for a tweet or a snippet. More attention is needed. So, my apologies that this article may look to some so, so long. It really isn’t. I worry, instead, that it isn’t long enough. You decide.

This past weekend my partner and I got together with a group of friends. We’ve been meeting every six weeks or so since 1982. Originally, this group of lesbians convened to talk about sex: what we were doing, what we wanted to do, what we fantasized about doing. But you know how it is with any relationship. Over time, it can come to embrace so many other things. That’s how it’s been with the group we call “Group” (or sometimes “A Closed Group with No Name”).

The administrative spectacle now unfolding exceeds all expectations. How should we respond? What is appropriate? I remember Abbie Hoffman and the general inclination of New Left times and other situations as well when people tried to extinguish evil with ridicule and satire, with facts and debate, or with ridicule and facts both at once—but what Trump and his allies undertake, with who knows what precise calculations, is beyond the beyond. How should we respond to that?

Trump, Musk, Vance, Kennedy and the rest of our new government’s murderous members now oversee political life in the USA. Things were already horrific and have been for ages. But now the worst garbage has fully risen. Humanity has seen this before and the view isn’t pretty. So where is the dump site? Where is the dump truck to remove all of this insidious and barely organic waste matter from public impact?
